Review a Catapult unit before purchase

Have more questions? Submit a request

Review the exact unit package before you purchase it. Product-type descriptions show common patterns, although a unit's assessment conditions, evidence tools, software, facilities and supporting documents might be different from another unit in the same catalogue.

Include an administrator, a compliance or quality reviewer and a trainer or assessor in the review. Add a workplace or technical specialist where the unit requires one.

If your organisation does not yet have access, see How to get access to Catapult LMS. For the review process, see Previewing units in the Catapult LMS.'

Confirm the unit and package

Review funnel covering the checks an RTO completes before purchasing a unit.

Record:

  • unit code and title
  • training package, package version and unit release from training.gov.au
  • Catapult product type and any displayed product version
  • edition code or edition title for a contextualised variant
  • catalogue status
  • documents supplied with the package

Do not use a filename, page appearance or screenshot alone to decide which product or release you have. Follow Identify your Catapult product type and unit release, using the current catalogue or purchase record and training.gov.au. If the details cannot be verified, contact Customer Support on (08) 8275 9333 or support@catapult-elearning.com before purchase.

Walk through the learner experience

In Catapult LMS, an Admin can add the Learner role to their account, create a review enrolment through New Enrolment Sheet, then open the unit from the Enrolments page. These are the labels used in Previewing units in the Catapult LMS.

Step 1. The Catapult LMS New Learner user form, completed with synthetic reviewer details. Step 2. The Enrolment Sheet at step 1 of 3, with one row filled in for a sample reviewer, unit and trainer. Step 3. The unit home as the review account sees it, with navigation to the learning resource and assessments.

Follow the learner path from the unit home page to the final assessment submission without saving answers in the assessment tools. Saving an answer can make the review enrolment chargeable and prevent an automatic credit when it is deleted.

Check the topic structure, formative learning activities, assessment sections, downloadable files and submission instructions. Note where learners leave Catapult LMS to use a document, website, spreadsheet, video service or workplace system.

Review every assessment component

For each assessment, confirm:

  • what the learner must do
  • where the work takes place
  • what evidence must be submitted or observed
  • who can observe or verify performance
  • which equipment, materials, facilities or software are required
  • where the benchmark or marking guidance is kept
  • how authenticity and record retention will be handled

Practical assessment might require a workplace, an approved simulation, direct observation, third-party evidence or several forms of evidence. These requirements can affect scheduling and cost.

Open the supporting files

Open every file referred to in the learning and assessment instructions. Check that the file is present, readable, current and intended for the right audience.

Pair learner documents with the relevant assessor guide, model answer, checklist or solution. Excel workbooks deserve a separate check for formulas, protected cells, macros and the version of spreadsheet software your organisation supports.

Catapult Collective units are currently available through Catapult LMS only. Workbooks and supporting documents can still be downloaded through the LMS. For Certify, V6 and V5, confirm whether printed resources are available for the exact unit; do not assume printed availability across a product type.

Assessor-only: Keep model answers, benchmarks, completed workbooks, marking guides and observation decisions unavailable to learners.

Check mapping and assessor guidance

Find the mapping for the unit and confirm how it is presented. Mapping might appear in Catapult LMS or in a separate document. Locate benchmarks, marking criteria, observation records and practical instructions at the same time.

Mapping supports traceability. Your RTO still needs to review the assessment tools before use and decide whether the implemented assessment system is fit for the unit, the student cohort and the delivery context.

Check delivery dependencies

Record any requirement for:

  • a workplace or placement
  • a simulated environment
  • specialist equipment, tools, materials or personal protective equipment
  • licensed software or online services
  • external websites, videos or current industry references
  • file uploads, video evidence or large documents
  • accessibility adjustments or learner support

Test important links and file workflows using the same devices, browsers and network conditions your learners will use.

Record the decision

Keep the completed review with the unit and package details. Record any conditions attached to the purchase decision, including missing information, required contextualisation, setup work and approval owners.
