Plan the practical assessment from the unit requirements and the supplied instrument. Confirm the setting, tasks, evidence, observation method and assessor records before scheduling learners.
Read the complete practical instrument
Practical instructions might sit across Catapult LMS, a Word document, a checklist, a logbook or a project workbook. Open every referenced file.
Mark the sections written for the learner, assessor, workplace observer and third party. Check that each person receives the right instructions.
Confirm the setting
Record whether the assessment will occur in a workplace, an approved simulation or another setting allowed by the training product. Check facilities, equipment, materials, personal protective equipment and access to workplace information.
If a simulation is used, document how it meets the required conditions.
Define the evidence
For each task, state what will be:
- directly observed
- uploaded to Catapult LMS
- completed in a workbook or template
- recorded in a logbook
- supported by photo or video
- verified by a workplace observer or third party
Check that the evidence can be linked to the learner and retained under your RTO's procedure.
Prepare observers and third parties
Give the observer the relevant task instructions and evidence record. Explain what they can report and what remains an assessor judgement.
Confirm any required experience, relationship to the learner or workplace authority before the activity.
Prepare the assessor
Locate the benchmark, observation criteria, model answer and mapping. Discuss how the criteria will be applied where several assessors are involved.
Set a process for incomplete evidence, reassessment and technical failure during uploads or video capture.
Test the workflow
Run one task from instruction to final record. Test forms, filenames, uploads, links and assessor access.
Do this before learners attend a workplace or booked facility. A small setup error can waste a practical session.
